The southern slopes of the Polden Hills and, below them, the waterlogged flatlands of the Levels – the northern edges of Walton Moor; 13 Jan 2016.
I’m standing up on Walton Hill, looking southeastwards along the Poldens’ southern flanks. There are farms, houses and bright pools of water, and someone is stoking a smoky bonfire.
As soon as I saw that smoke I imagined it paler than reality, amidst darker shades. And I’ve made those shades much darker, darker than you may feel comfortable with in fact – and perhaps a feeling of discomfort is intended here. Perhaps I see that billowing smoke is the sole living and bright thing in an otherwise sombre and deadened world – maybe a world at dusk, maybe something going deeper (or should that be, darker?) than that.
D800 with 70-300 Nikkor at 300mm; 160 ISO; Silver Efex Pro 2, starting at the Antique Portrait preset and adding a tone.

Beautiful; very much like how a painter may have chosen to emphasise the stillness, lights and shades. Wonderful depth; it never seems to end.

Daksha, thank you very much! And if the images that I show from others’ blogs open new worlds for you, that’s especially pleasing – the more images we see, the more visually aware we become – which is certainly good for our photography, our visual ideas. Adrian 🙂
