ARCHIVE STILL LIFE

This is a new category on this blog – Archive Still Life studies.  The Still Life definition will certainly be followed loosely – e.g. some studies may only have been made “still” by the split second opening of the camera’s shutter – and my objective will be to use as many different types / genres of subject matter as possible.  Some images will be Minimalist and, in general, I try to make simpler images, rather than cramming them with visual content.

Some new Still Life studies will (hopefully!) continue to appear.



ARCHIVE: STILL LIFE 7 – LOOKING AT CHAIRS 23 – CHAIR BEHIND DIRTY WINDOW


A long while back, I decided to bring down the curtain on a series of images that I was doing called Looking At Chairs.  These were mainly more or less graphic studies – because, as with cars, chairs are often visually interesting, depending upon the directions from which they are viewed, in combination with the direction and nature of the light that is falling upon them.  Some said that they’d like to see more such images and, weak-willed p(r)awn that I am, I agreed to further posts, as and when such images surfaced.  Here is one.

Car in a basement garage.  The garage is set down below the level of the adjacent pavement, and has open, barred windows – that let in light and air and let out exhaust fumes, and that keep out those with a predilection for theft.

The camera is looking down into this garage, framing some of a car’s rear lights and bodywork.  The window bars make linear reflections on the bodywork, and I’m the more or less amorphous blob (how apt!) just below centre stage.

Adult Herring Gull, Porthleven, Cornwall; 18 Oct 2016.

A big, meaty bird, a bird to be taken seriously – and particularly so if its trying to steal your lunch!  The dark streaking shows it to be in winter plumage.

Looking at this now, in 2020, I wonder how I might characterise him in human terms >>> big, feathered, aggressive, opportunistic hooligan might do it – and, in my eyes, absolutely wonderful too.  Well, I am after all a birder but it goes back much further than that: I grew up on the coast and these birds were a constant and noisy part of my younger years, they are in effect a part of who I am, I think.  I can well remember taking my first job away from the coast, in Milton Keynes of all places: there were no gulls there and I really felt their absence, it was somehow like being in a very different place.

ARCHIVE: LOOKING AT CARS 32 – CAR PARK (MONO + COLOUR)

Looking up at Trenchard Street Car Park in central Bristol; 16 Sept 2016.

Tilted (at capture) to produce a strong diagonal, a dynamic that I prefer to leaving things staidly horizontal.  Then processed to give an almost pure black and white look – black and white,  two blank tones that reveal no detail.   While keeping in mind that, viewed against the pure white background of my blog, the white areas would show no border to the image, so that the image can be viewed as four separate images, juxtaposed.  Restoration of the rear lights’ colour provides two small focal points.

I suppose that what I’m aiming at, what I like to think, is that such an image becomes less a representation of reality, and more a piece of design.  Such an attitude may seem pretentious, but it does represent to some extent “where I am” with regard to images.
