CORNWALL 78 – DARK METAL ON WHITE WALL, RUSTING (MONO + COLOUR)

mmm
.

.
Ventilation pipe, St Ives; 10 Oct 2013.

A ventilation pipe emerging from the whitewashed wall of a cottage beside the harbour in St Ives.

What is here?  The actual pipe is the poorly seen cylinder in the heart of the structure.  It is surrounded by a metal grill – like those on desktop fans –  to prevent the ingress of birds and flying debris.  If we take this circular grill as a clock face, its shadow falls onto the wall at the 7th hour.  The pipe and grill are rusting in the sea air, causing a reddish brown stain to run down the wall.

Presenting this as a negative, the whitewash becomes black, and the blackish pipe and grill very pale greyish.  The rust’s colour has been approximately restored.

A second take on a notice fixed to a metal pipe beside Camborne’s main street; 9 Oct 2013.

I kept the first of these images (which is here) in colour, because the scene had a good deal of dirt and grime, which adds to its atmosphere.

Here is a mono version, which is more stylised, clean (literally!) cut and abstract.  Contrast has been lifted, the grime lost, and the textures and structures (the cracks) of the wall emphasised.

The colour of “W119” has been restored, to ensure its prominence.  Finally, I’ve added a blue tone and applied rotation, to add to the abstract effect.

CORNWALL 76 – W119

Beside Camborne’s main street; 9 Oct 2013.

I had an initial thought about using mono here, but preferred to stick with the overall griminess and tarnish.  I have no idea what W119 is or was – unless its the pipe!

The orange sign obviously stands out, but the bright metal strut to the left is also a highlight amongst all this duller light and shadow.

There were a lot of things to photograph in Camborne’s main street – unless of course that was just the mood I happened to be in that day – but I recommend a walk there if you find yourself in this town.

BRISTOL 40 – REFLECTIONS OF WINDOWS (MONO + COLOUR)

Window reflections in the bodywork of a car outside the Council House, central Bristol; 5 July 2013.

I was down in central Bristol today, for lunch with a good friend.  The midday sun was blazing and, outside the Council House, was a car that had been polished to a pristine, mirror-like reflectiveness –  something which I can’t help thinking betrays a certain lack of imagination.

And just visible near the left hand end of the door handle is what appears to be a tiny, sunlit egg, bending forwards slightly ->>> my hairless dome, as I peer down into the G11’s magic screen.

Canon G11 Powershot at 140mm (35mm equivalent); 400 ISO; conversion to mono and selective re-colouring with Silver Efex Pro 2, starting at the High Contrast Smooth preset.
