The morning was very misty but, in pursuit of Minimalism, I’ve added a pale vignette to further reduce detail.

And this all enfolding mistiness also serves to enhance the impression of a lone individual pursuing his passion early on a calm morning, surrounded by the gentle sounds of water, birds, and the lightest of breezes.

ARCHIVE: STILL LIFE 33 – ON THE MAIN STREET OF PENZANCE (MONO + COLOUR)


Telephone boxes in Penzance, Cornwall; 27 Apr 2012.

These two telephone boxes stand beside the road in Penzance’s main street but, because the pavement is raised, it is possible to photograph them straight on, rather than having to look up at them.  They are in poor condition and badly in need of attention – but this semi-dereliction makes for a strong photographic subject.

I’ve taken them into mono and restored some of their characteristic colour, and also increased structure to help emphasise their grimy, peeling surfaces.

Technique: D700 with 70-300 Nikkor lens at 300mm; 800 ISO; converted to mono with selective colour restoration and other manipulation in Silver Efex Pro 2.

ARCHIVE: PEOPLE 6 – DEATH OF A BEAUTIFUL PERSON

 

Well, I’m looking through the pictures that I have of my fellow beings and, really, it would be unthinkable to leave George Ann out.  As always, Time flies by: she died over five years ago.  But knowing her – if only remotely, from across an ocean – has left a very real and valuable effect on how I look at things, in all senses of the phrase.

There are many wonderful things in Life and, in amongst all those things, there are encounters with people who truly inspire the spirit and uplift the soul.  George Weaver was one of those beautiful people.

I met her through her WordPress blog, She kept a parrot.  She wrote it for her grandson, Charlie, so that he would have something to remember her by after her death.  It fulfils that role now.

I  am struck by her blog’s content.  I’m really into images, often irrespective of their stories or implications.  But, along with George’s beautiful pictures of living (and dead) things, her blog hit me with its vibrance and sheer joy in – and wonderful attitudes to – Life.  It was like no other blog I know, it was vivid and felt so very much alive.

She kept a parrot is still on line.  You could do a lot worse than to pop over and have a look through it.

Long before her death, George knew that she was seriously, potentially terminally, ill.  She chose not to receive medical treatment, and faced death with a great deal of both courage and common sense.

She and I corresponded regularly and, maybe not least because neither of us were exactly spring chickens and also because we shared a love the Natural world, we found that we had much in common.  It is a vast pleasure to have known her, a vast pleasure the warmth and glow of which, for me at least, counteracts somewhat the sorrow of losing her. 

I have been enriched by her friendship, humanity and humour.

Flattened beer can, retrieved from a gutter in Bristol; 22 Jan 2006.

A dramatically up close and personal picture of an everyday object.  It is lit by the harsh, warm, directional light of a slide projector.

I sited the red panel containing the beer’s name at the top left of the picture,  and made it slightly truncated by the photo’s margins, to give the impression of a large and powerful but crumpled object squeezing into the picture’s frame.  Siting the beer’s name in the center of the composition would have less effect.

ARCHIVE: STILL LIFE 31 – COTTAGE IN PEASLAKE (MONO + COLOUR)


 

Cottage in Peaslake, Surrey; 25 Mar 2012.

A glorious sunny morning in Peaslake, and this cottage caught my eye.  I often find rural cottages in affluent areas far too prettified and picturesque, but here the overlapping blue trellises on either side of the darker front door, and the blue window frames, all looked good and relatively uncomplicated.

I cropped in tight so as to fill the composition with (most of) the trellises and window.   Then followed conversion to mono, and restoration of the blue colouration of the trellises and window frames, in SEP2.

Apart from the dark surrounds to the front door, the image has been made pale and pastel by lightening the highlights and blues, and by the application of a thin, pale vignette.
