Hi Mark – thanks for your kind words, glad you like my images – and thank you too for the Follow! I like seeing other people’s pictures, as someone put it, it “adds to the visual library in my head” – visual experience, very true I think. I often trawl through WordPress’s Freshly Pressed for just this reason. Thanks again! Adrian

        Hi Andrian

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps I should start doing the same. I don’t normally look at Fleshly Pressed but will have a look. Feedback on my images is always welcome if you have any thoughts. Good to talk to you.

Yes, have a look at Freshly Pressed – many of the images are not to my taste, but there are usually some real crackers. And if you’re into mono, I very strongly recommend getting Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2 – 101% recommended! I use it very frequently. And you’re from Aylesbury – my wife’s part of the world! Good to talk to you too! A 🙂

Thank you, Lynn, thank you! I don’t really know if there is a thread here, apart from my siting a lot of favourite shots on my front page, as an eye catcher. But there is a range of genres here, and that is something I like to do – someone said that they never know what they’re going to see next on this blog, and that seems to me to be a situation to keep going with. 6. Really, really beautiful work. I am so glad I found your blog. I especially love your choices in composition. Something I’m trying to be a little more adventurous with myself, but haven’t quite gotten there. I look forward to seeing more. Thanks, Adrian.

Hello, Susan, and thanks for your good thoughts! Composition is not always straightforward, and here are some thoughts. First, this link – http://wp.me/p1wq8h-60l – will hopefully (I’m not too good on these things) take you to a post on this blog from a little while back, in which I talk about simple things that can be done to improve our photos.

I think the post this links to talks about our learning to say “why” we like or dislike an image – which is a most important ability to achieve – and that post also gives links to earlier posts, with more tips. I hope you’ll find these 3 posts useful, and if you have any questions or things to discuss, please do ask me.

There are compositional “rules” eg the “rule” of thirds. They can be useful >>> but do NOT follow them slavishly, or all of your images will look the same.

Also there is the fact that those of us from Western cultures scan images from left to right and top to bottom. Earlier posts of mine talk about this. There are certainly cases where an image that looks good with the subject on the right looks far from good with the subject on the left.

And finally, go with your gut feelings – and before you complete an image, play around with it – flip and rotate it every which way >>> does any orientation jump out at you? – you’ll find many rotated compositions on this blog.

Hope this is useful! I’m always up for more discussion. Adrian 🙂

Glad this is useful, Susan! I suppose that the only thing to add is for you to be brave – be courageous! – with your compositions. Don’t go for the tried and tested formulae, take chances – and put your efforts out on your blog, asking for feedback. Good luck! Adrian

Hello Shakti, good to be in contact with you, and thank you for your kind words about my pictures. An exhibition? No, I’m far too lazy for that! My passion lies in creating beautiful and/or striking images, and I’m happy to do that and “send them out to the world” via this blog. Then, since I do not entirely trust the longevity of internet systems, I take my favourite images and make them into books, to keep and look at, via Blurb.com .

I’ve looked at your blog and am interested by it. I was in Muscat some decades ago, as a geologist. I like your post about The Mask – I’ll talk more to you by making a Comment on that post. Thank you again for your kind words. Adrian

I regularly trawl Freshly Pressed, especially early in the (UK) morning, looking for images that appeal to me – and your’s is one of those. When I like these images, they appear in my blog’s sidebar – up and on the right, up above here – your image is there now.

Hello, VR! Yes of course you can use my photo of Chum – he and I did some birdwatching together, notably in Kakamega Forest, where this shot was taken, and I knew him quite well.

Reference to myself and the blog will be great.

I can send you a full quality jpeg, as the photos on the blog are far from top quality. If you can send me an email at helpful1@blueyonder.co.uk , which is this blog’s email address, I’ll send you the jpeg by return. Adrian
