ARCHIVE AT 600

Shop window mannequin: Truro, Cornwall; 15 Sept 2011.

(Clicking onto any image here will open a larger version in a separate window – particularly recommended for the 3rd image, the flowering Blackthorn).

After nearly 10 years of FATman Photos, the Archive series has now reached 600 posts.  In the “early days” I can remember some surprise that I was posting images for a second time but, to me, this is fine so long as a reasonable interval has passed since the previous posting – after all, few want to see the same picture reposted in rapid succession.  To ensure that such rapid reposting does not occur (and as perhaps the single positive spin off from my 20 OMG!!! years in data analysis), I log the date of each posting onto an Excel spreadsheet, which gives me instant feedback.  The photos used in each post are stored in their own separate folder on my PC and backups, so that relocating them is never a problem.

There is also the important point that reposting of early images makes them easily accessible to recent followers of my blog who may otherwise never see them at all.

I am also posting two more specialised Archives now.  One (nearly completed) presents film images, taken in Kenya from 1977 to 1989.  And the other (which also includes some new images) looks at cars in a range of ways.  Another specialised archive, on the Somerset Levels – one of the loves of my life – is planned.

Due to the dangers and restrictions of the covid pandemic, I’m not taking so many new photos at present, but I have found the compact Olympus TG-5 camera very easy to carry in my pocket while out walking the streets for exercise – most of these photos from these walks can be found in the Outer Suburbs series.

Geoff was a good friend and neighbour who each summer gave us fruit and vegetables from his immaculately kept garden.  Here is one of his delicious apples.  I post this with sadness because Geoff died sometime back, and we no longer have the warm friendship and neighbourliness of this real English Gentleman of the old school –  nor his tasty fruit and veg.  27 Sept 2008.

Quite early on a morning in spring, and Jack’s Drove, the road north across the Tadham and Tealham Moors, on the Somerset Levels, is blocked; 10 Apr 2014.  The jet black area that cuts horizontally through my shadow is the water-filled ditch that separates the rough pasture of the field at the top of the frame from the road on which I’m standing.

    • Yes, I have noticed your absence, Helen, and I’m very glad to hear you’re ok.

Well, I do keep going – I’m retired of course and so have the time, and although I’m taking few photos in these ravaged times, I’ve been blogging for nearly a decade, and so have large numbers of pictures to re-post. And because I spent the final 20 years of my working life in data management and analysis (for my sins …), I have my blogging archives well organised, so that most images etc are readily to hand. 🙂

  1. Hearty congrats on your 6M milestone, my friend. I’m especially drawn in to your image of the apple–your treatment of the lighting reminds me strongly of the school of the old Dutch masters.

  2. Congratulations on keeping it all going for so long – and well-organized! This series shows off your – can I say legendary? – versatility. I know you can do a lot with that little camera but please, let’s everyone get vaccinated!!!

    • Thank you, well I try for a varied range of images.

The 75+ age group are being vaccinated here now, and I’m 71 next month, so my vaccination shouldn’t be too far off. I’m happy to just wait until I’m contacted. Have you had your’s yet? Hope so! 🙂

  3. What a fantastic selection to mark your 600th Archive post! That poppy image is one of the best flower images I’ve ever seen – I’m giving up, lol! Love the apple, also – especially poignant because of Geoff.

I might take your lead and re-post some of my older images; ’tis a good idea. I very much look forward to your Somerset Levels archive series.

    • Thank you very much, M, your words mean a lot – and especially with regard to flower pics. Course I’m good with flowers … cauliflower (with lots of thick gravy) for a start …. 😉 ….

Because of the pandemic, things are difficult photographywise for many of us, and so to archive pics. But in any case, quite irrespective of the virus, I can see no reason not to re-post pics from the (not too recent) past. There seemed to be a feeling that it was somehow cheating and “not quite cricket”, that it was almost a taboo really, but for those like you and I, and other wayward souls too, who have been blogging for nearly a decade, its a no-brainer. Because either the pics will been out of view so long that they’ve been forgotten, or simply that new followers to our blogs will never have seen them. 🙂

      • You are very welcome, my friend. Thanks for all the inspiration you’ve given me and others over the years.

How do you actually post your archive photos? I know there’s a re-blog feature – do you use that or do you make a new post altogether with the addition of the original photo? I’ve seen some people re-blog with all the original likes and comments, but I don’t want to do it that way.

        • Very glad to hear that I provide inspiration, that’s very good to hear, thank you!

No I certainly don’t use re-blog. On File Explorer, I store each post’s image(s) in its/their own folder, with folder names that line up in date order of posting >>> and so folder names like Bristol001, Bristol002, Bristol003 etc, with NO gap between the Bristol and the 003. Similarly, Levels405, Levels406, etc. Then I open a blank WP post and load the image(s) onto it; this can be done other ways but I don’t get out much and that’s what I do…..

And then in the post editor I go back to the original post (or the most recent Archive post if the post has been posted more than twice), and simply copy the post’s text onto the (new or next) Archive post; and then add tags etc.

Does that make sense??? If not, get back to me. Remember, if there is a single pistol shot, I shall hear it … …. 🙂 …….

This blog has two pleasures for me - creating the images and hearing from you - so get your thoughts out to the world!
