Yes, certainly, but this is commonplace here, and the trees always grow back to their full splendour.

No, they just get bushier and bushier crowns, and they look fine. I’ve taken many pictures of willows on the Levels, and most of them will have been pollarded. Regular pollarding is the thing. Problems can arise otherwise, with danger for example of the resulting top heavy trees collapsing.

OK. I know very little about it, so I’ll take your word for it. I know that when it’s done properly the results are actually quite attractive.
