    This shot is a tossed salad of a lot of different elements and yet it works so well. You’re making that new Nikon earn its keep

      I think “tossed salad” sums it up very well! I like to experiment. And yes, I’m very enthused by the new Nikon, I find a very useful and creative tool. A 🙂


  3. My comment is the same as Paula’s. But I add this: I would have tried everything to get the pole out of the shot. You feature it. You win.

      Well, there’s 2 things here, Michael. First, needs must. I’m positioned at the top of a flight of quite steep steps that descends between buildings from a higher street to a lower one – there’s not a lot of room for lateral manoeuvre and the poles were right there.

      But second, the overall feeling of the shot. In this composition (which has been cropped), I’m looking for a shut in, claustrophobic feel, and the poles add to that – and the more so because of the signs attached to them (telling us what to do, perhaps) and (even more) the graffiti/tags on the left one.

      To further add to the breathless, claustrophobic feel, I’m thinking that perhaps I ought to have brought to upper edge of the frame down (much) closer to the heads of the two men.

      • Thanks Adrian. In addition to the shot him, claustrophobic feel, I also see an isolation since the two people in the shot are separated by the pole. It almost looks like two separate scenes in two separate locations. So near yet so far.

          That’s an interesting interpretation, and I agree with you. ” A city is a large community where people are lonesome together.” is a quote I read somewhere (I think in my diary!); and I’m interested in this, and in the dehumanisation of people working in cities generally. I am exceedingly glad to be retired, and so out of both the rat race and the “work ethic”!!! 🙂

      • May I insert myself between you and Michael? I think you have superbly created “a shut in, claustrophobic feel, and the poles add to that.” If you crop closer to the heads of the two men at the top, I think the image becomes much more about pattern than the claustrophobic feel. It would still be an interesting photograph, but—in my opinion—lose the narrative aspect.
