FANTASY: Life, the universe and everything – an island of Life amidst the teeming vastnesses of the universe.  A tiny island, fragile but vibrant amongst the chaos.  And since it a core belief of mine – sure as death and taxes! –  that the Earth does not harbour the universe’s only lifeforms, this is AN island of Life, rather than THE island (I leave that latter belief to those with more faith than I can possibly muster).

And, thinking of Life elsewhere, do I think it a good idea that we try to contact whatever is Alive on any of the other “Life islands” on the cosmos?  Well, for me, the jury’s out on that one.  Such a contact would certainly be of great interest and perhaps benfit.  Unless of course whatever we manage to contact is far more technologically advanced than ourselves, and with a predatory tendency to exploit both our planet and ourselves in ways that we currently  reserve for our planet and all things that are not ourselves (and actually, thinking about it … I suppose quite a few of ourselves too …).

REALITY: grass growing on excavated peat at a peat works down a little road east of Catcott Burtle, on the Somerset Levels; 3 June 2014.  The peat is in any case mainly blackish although it does contain paler fragments, but for greater effect I’ve left it all in black and white, and restored only the colour of the grass.  And my vision of an island of Life in a sea of “non-Life” is of course exactly wrong, as the peat consists of the remains of plant life that covered this area only a few thousand years ago – the peat is anything but inorganic!

I love this simple but great composition! The green grass creates a strong effect here 🙂

Poignant looking bit of grass…as if it is the last of its kind.. who knows , as things are going you could not be certain. Good , striking photo.

Too true, we can’t be certain – I revisit places where I started out birdwatching in 1967 and, from my notes of those times, there simply aren’t the numbers of birds around today that there were then. A
