This is a shot of the tips of coarse marsh grasses protruding from floodwater in a field on Tadham Moor, on the Somerset Levels; 23 Nov 2012. I recently posted this image in colour, when Gary Bolstad suggested that it might also look good in black and white – so here is a mono version, created and lightly toned in Silver Efex Pro 2. The colour version is also presented again for direct comparison.
Presentation in mono certainly enhances the Minimalist qualities of this picture and, ro me, the addition of a thin black border helps it too. So I think Gary is absolutely right. Anyone got any views?

For me, as a picture of grass in floodwater, definitely coloured. Don’t you think the blue sky reflecting in the water gives a comfortable feeling of the calm after the storm? 🙂
On the other hand, taking the reality out of the picture, the black and white version could be a lively medical graph, or a computer screen design produced by lively music. 🙂

Right, I’ve had a look at your profile, which I like, and I’m going to try uploading some images (tho I’ve yet to register with 500px but will do so). But I can’t find some simple “intro to 500px, how it works, etc” – are you able to point me at anything on 500px that takes the beginner through what has to be done to get up and running? Thanks for your help! Adrian

Thanks, all you have to do is create an account by clicking sign up at the top right. Then once you are logged in, at the top right there’s an upload button. You can upload by dragging and dropping your pictures or you can select them normally. Afterwards you can add captions, geotags, etc. It will then be uploaded and added to the “Fresh” section which can be viewed by clicking on the top left button “Discover” and then “Fresh”. There are lots of sections here: Fresh are photos that have just been uploaded. Popular are most popular at the moment. Editors are best picked by the editors of 500px. Upcoming are those that are new but becoming popular. Don’t worry about marketplace for now. There are also categories such as Nature, Abstract, etc.
You can like photos by pressing the thumbs up button and favourite them if you really like them. People can follow others if they really like their work.

Many thanks for all this detail, its most helpful. What size pictures do you post? I mean, for example, rather than full quality jpegs, I post reduced size (and quality) jpegs on WordPress, usually with a longest side of 800 or 1,000 pixels. Do you do the same on 500px, or do you post full quality jpegs? Adrian

I post on postimg for WordPress at a compressed size of 80% I think (I can look it up if you want), but I post full quality on 500px because they ask that you post the highest quality you have.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleoside triphosphate used in cells as a coenzyme often called the “molecular unit or currency” of intracellular energy….GOT it now..bit slow on the uptake!
