ARCHIVE 143 – AN INVITATION TO COME AND SEE TOYS (MONO)

A friend, aged two, calls me over to see her toys; 30 Aug 2011.

What’s that phrase, “Praise the lord and keep passing the ammunition!”?  Well this is “Praise the lord and keep the autofocus working!” – she turned abruptly and beckoned, I had her eyes in focus and there was just time for a single frame.

D700 with 105mm Nikkor; 12,800 ISO; conversion to mono in Silver Efex Pro 2.

UPDATE: this was originally posted in autumn 2011, before I’d ever thought about using noise reduction software.  Nowadays, having shot an image at 12,800 ISO, I’d probably at least consider reducing the noise with Nik’s Dfine 2 software.  But, looking at this, I think that doing so might be a mistake, it might deprive the image of some of its character perhaps, making it cleaner and more bland and antiseptic.  As it is, her face is relatively noise-free, and her eyes are reasonably in focus (thanks to the autofocus!) and looking straight at me.  As for the rest, well it all tails off into a noisy softness which, aided by the pale vignette, serves to keep our attention right in there, focused on the sense on happiness and buoyant fun at that moment in that young life.
