Sunrise, somewhere in Kenya, probably in the late 1970s – how’s that for vague?
An Agfa colour slide with absolutely no information on it. Am I sure its a sunrise? I think so – it has that clean, clear look – but who knows? And where is it taking place? Well, somewhere very flat – the bush country of Tsavo maybe, or perhaps the Maasai Mara grasslands?
(March 2015 update: looking at the enlarged version of this, which I haven’t done before, I can see what looks like a huge, dark mountain side rising up into dark cloud at bottom right. And just as this slope rises out of the mist, there is a faint little pimple, which could well be a small volcanic cone – a volcanolet, if you like. All of which suggests to me that this may show the lower slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain – in which case this was taken in the Amboseli Game Reserve or in Tsavo).
But such details, while adding interest and maybe value, are peripheral. I like it as an image – and here it is. How I miss those huge skies!

Isn’t it gratifying to find slides that are almost 40 years old that still retain their colors?! I love browsing the archives for stirring up the memories, too–of course!

I’m compiling a post on longevity of images, my friend – and you’re right about 40 years being wonderful, but in The Great Scheme Of Things its not a long time – I guess the thing is to get our most liked slides onto digital, prints or photobooks for greater longevity. Some of my Kenyan slides (nearly all done on Agfa CT18) are showing a little discolouration now; sometimes its fixable digitally – and of course there’s always the mono option! I agree, looking back through the archives is really good. How are your arm injuries doing, by the way? Are you recovering well – I do hope so. The wound from my small operation has healed wonderfully. A

Doing just great–no more formal physical therapy, but continuing stretching & strengthening at home. Now if I just had a couple of new knees…

Nice to ‘find’ one like this. I know what you mean about Huge skies..I am in the Netherlands at the moment and we know a little about skies here but nothing like Africa..so I have been told. Never been there.

Thanks for your thoughts, my friend – I hope you’re enjoying your roots, at home. Oh, Africa is big – I remember standing on the rift valley escarpment, seeing the unmistakeable outline of a well known volcano apparently not that far off – only to discover later that it had been 100 miles away – the landscapes are vast – thank heavens I had a 28mm lens with me!
