Thatched roof in Wareham, Dorset; 7 Nov 2006.

Use of a 24mm wide angle lens, close in, emphasises the vast, rough bulk of the thatch, making it loom towards the camera, almost filling the frame.  The chimney, totally outscaled, appears to be toppling, again as a result of the distortion of the wide lens.

I originally intended this shot to be monochrome, but the slight tinges of colour in the thatch, the chimney and the plant improve it – instances of low key colour (in this instance, restored colour) adding something.

Nikon F6 with 24-85 Nikkor at 24mm; Fuji Provia 400 colour slide rated at 1600 ISO; Silver Efex Pro 2, starting at the Neutral preset and selectively restoring colour.

      Great, Paula, glad you – thank you! Pretty cottages come under the picturesque, and that’s something I try to stay away from – one reason for this being that they tend to produce very cluttered images ->> more is less. I do have a cottage picture from Stanton Drew which I’m thinking about posting – along with the proviso that its rather bland. Oh yes – how I enjoyed your colours of autumn post – wowee! A

      How did I get up there …. oh temptation, get thee in front of me … and soon please … if its all the same to you … oh yes, there you are … well my wife gave me a bunk up … which is legal and above board when you’re married … and which makes her member of truly herculean minority … as well as bringing a whole new meaning to “And how are you getting on today?” … Ah, whimsy …

      Sordid reality … as far as I remember, I was up on a road or path above this dwelling – just how mind-numbing can I get?!

    I appreciate how you say the technical aspects of the shot. I am Interested in learning more about what goes into taking pictures. This what I need to take better pictures of my work. I love the texture of the roof to the simplicity of the background. Great work

      Thank you, Sheldon, that’s good to hear! Regarding “what goes into taking pictures”, there are two words that you mention that are of great importance.

      First, simplicity. For me, the simpler compositions are better, because our eyes can easily see what the photo is trying to show. Cluttered compositions confuse our eyes, our eyes don’t know where to look, and hence the photos are weaker, they have less impact.

      Second, background. A “busy”, cluttered or contrasty background can easily spoil an image by detracting from the image’s subject. Thus, one of photography’s important rules – when taking an image, always consider the background – will it intrude upon your subject? Can you subdue the background either by rendering it out of focus, or by adjusting your viewpoint?
