Meadow with wildflowers beside North Chine Drove, southeast of Wedmore, on the Somerset Levels; 27 Jul 2011.
The uncut grass with its abundance of tall yellow wildflowers first caught my eye and, and I was looking at how it might best be photographed when the sun broke through the clouds, producing this beautiful (and very lucky) shaft of light across the scene.
The photo is in three layers. In the foreground there are more of the yellow flowers, but in the shade and unfocused. Above this, the shaft of sunlight cuts across the shot, illuminating both the tall grasses and another grove of the wildflowers. Finally, the third and upper layer contains the trees and bushes behind the field which (luckily again) are partly caught by the sun’s rays, so that this background is not wholly dark.
D700 with 70-300 Nikkor at 300mm; 400 ISO; converted to monochrome, and slightly tinted very pale yellow, with Silver Efex Pro.

Sonali, thank you very much – good to hear that! Adrian 🙂

Good example of layering. There’s always good quality light when you shoot towards it. You see images that are just invisible when the clouds turn the light out.

I like “when the clouds turn the light out”, very well put. That happened to me recently – I had something sunlit and good in the viewfinder and was actually just starting to squeeze the shutter release when – literally in an instant – all was reduced to total, grey mundanity. And shooting towards the light – I agree entirely. Thanks, Andy! Adrian

This is lovely, Adrian; the light is beautiful. Although monochrome, one can almost see the colours; the mind fills them in.

Thanks! Feeling even older now >>> but to combat that I’ve just bought a super duper fast spin attack table tennis bat that I quite probably won’t have the skill to use – maybe its a bit like buying a red sports car but keeping to 30mph – but what the heck!!! 🙂

Dawna, thank you very much! And, like some others talking here and elsewhere, you don’t yearn for this in colour, do you? I mean, you’re not a Closet Colourist or anything like that, are you??? I hope your week is a good one! Adrian

No color needed, the impression is left to a softness of imagination. Your photo creates a moment of ponder…
Very serene.

Thank you! Its always good to talk to people and to hear thoughts – as I say here, hearing from others is one of the great pleasures I find in blogging – and I particularly like your phrases “softness of imagination”, and “moment of ponder” – thank you for these! Adrian

Sheila, thank you very much >>> and you’re a lifesaver, my longtime blogging friend, because some others want it all in pretty colours, probably with a large pink bow tied around it I shouldn’t wonder … think I need a strong drink … intravenously would be good …
Thank you again! Adrian 🙂

ha ha.. and you know what a lover of colour I am, but my photo roots are in black and white, first and foremost.

Well I had no idea at all about your roots being in black and white – how interesting! A 🙂

But where is the yellow?!

Oh you’re not the first – here and elsewhere – to want the yellow! Perhaps its been – and I’ve always wanted to use this word – expunged!!!
I know, I know, my dark self has surfaced again, and I know equally that there’s not a hope in hell, or any other make believe place for that matter, of bringing you over to the Dark Side but … (deep, echoing voice) … “Hallysann … Hallysann .. it is your destiny …”

Expunged?!? … wiped away with a sponge??
As for the dark side, it calls but I’m holding onto the light by the skin of my teeth and they’re pretty strong considering the amount of metal they have in them. 🙂

LOL!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 And thanks for the details of your dentistry – do you set off airport alarms, by the way? …. just asking …… and are you barred from Metal Detectorists’ Conventions? … I mean … I’m out there in a field … thinking I’m onto limitless wealth … and it turns out to be you … behind a bush …
And not sure I fancy much for brekkers now … and certainly not anything iron-rich … 😉

Arrrrggghhhhh!!!! … I mean …. oh good!!!! This is an old shot (although only 2011), the original file of which must reside on a disused computer, and on an old backup somewhere – so I probably won’t dig it out, although there has been another request for colour – and another still to be posted! 🙂
