I know that look! The smile, the knowing and speculative glance – and behind that glance all kinds of mischief in the making. Seconds out … round 10,389 … ding-ding …
And there is the small point that, mayhem or no mayhem, I love this little lady very dearly, as I do her elder sister. I have known them for all of their lives, and they have certainly enriched mine.

Yes, honest portraits, no frills, and what you see is what you get, which is my case was the latest broadside of mischief!
Actually, in this case, she was sitting in really glorious window light, and what I was seeing through the viewfinder was simply photographically mouthwatering – but the little imp kept sticking her tongue out at me, which ruined the effect >>> until at last I was driven to bury my head in my hands and plead “Can you please stop poking your tongue out?” >>> whereupon this look appeared – she’d won!!! – and I released the shutter.

This is the wonderful person who, after her mother had consigned me to the Naughty Step at the bottom of their stairs – because my numerous misdemeanours! – brought me her dolly to sit there with me, so that I wouldn’t be lonely there on my own! What an adorable little girl. Yup, she’s got that look that would melt any heart. I’ve always wanted to have a little girl and ended up with two rambunctious boys instead. Just as well… having boys helped me become brave about handling bugs, worms, and other slimy critters that make girls squirm and run away. 🙂

Nourishment for the soul, oh I like that, Sarah, you’ve said it exactly! Little children – I’m not so big on surly adolescents! – but little children, they make me laugh and smile, and who can ask for more?

Children see all the simple and beautiful things around them. They have so much enthusiasm for new experiences! The world is a big adventure 🙂 I try to see the world in that childish manner! Keeps me young and happy 😉
My goddaughter is the oldest of all the children in my life at 9yrs. I just LOVE spending time with them and encouraging their interests, particularly in the natural world and art!
I couldn’t have children of my own but I feel that all adults have a responsibility to the next generations, to help them grow up happy with a deep love and understanding of the world they live in.

Sarah, I agree with every word that you have said. I’m very sad to hear that you yourself cannot have children: despite what some may think, life is by no means a bowl of cherries – the likes of you and I, and many others, know that.
Yes, keeping trying to see the world as children do is a very valuable thing, both generally and also in terms of being a photographer – it is all about retaining a sense of wonder, and not becoming jaded by familiarity. I love butterflies too, they’re amongst my favourite lifeforms. I can remember Alpine meadows teeming with them – and by coincidence I’ve just managed to capture a Tortoiseshell trapped inside our windows without damaging it, and put it back outside. A
