Cow on Tealham Moor, on the Somerset Levels; 9 Aug 2010.

We are used to thinking of pictures of countryside as landscapes, and we also talk of seascapes and cityscapes.  I enjoy getting in close when photographing large animals and so here, close in to a cow, is a cowscape.

I have cropped this with abstraction in mind. Most of the picture’s area consists of the almost featureless white flank of the animal; all of the detail lies around the top and left peripheries. The dark, lower edge of the ear lies heavily across the top of the frame, like a dark cloud with trailing, storm blown streamers.

The eye is reduced to featureless black, bordered by long, graceful lashes. Part of the face is shown left of and below the eye, with the group of dark flies gathered attentively, even malevolently, menacingly, below it, looking to feed on its dribbling juices.

Canon PowerShot G11; 200 ISO.

“Cowscape” – I love it! The photograph is a great idea, even with the “eww” factor!

Thank you! Getting in close to large animals (and to birds too, a relic of my birding days) has long been a thing I do – filling the frame with the creature, having it fade off to diffuseness in the backdrop. Glad you like this shot, Lynn! Adrian

    Completely surreal!

    Holy cow! I love it!

  6. Wow. This is cool, Adrian. One of your best, I think. The flank of the cow could very well be snow or anything, but I know it’s the cow. Clever composition. And very effective. The black eye is the icing. What an eye you have, Adrian! The eye of an artist!
