BIRDS 25 – AERIAL STILL LIFE (MONO)

mmm

.

Young gulls over the beach at St Ives, Cornwall; 27 Sept 2012.

These gulls, loafing quietly on the beach one moment, threw themselves into the air the next as a dog charged out at them.  That they missed colliding with each other was quite a feat – I have seen such collisions, but not many.

These are one of our larger gull species – probably Herring or Lesser Black-backed.  They are fierce and opportunistic predators and scavengers – should that dog ever find itself injured or in difficulties, it might be less willing to attract these vicious creatures’ attention.

Nikon D700 with 70mm-300mm VR Nikkor at 300mm; 400 ISO; converted to mono and toned with Silver Efex Pro 2, using the High Key 2 preset as a starting point.

Adrian, this is just awesome. I really like this photo. =)

    • Adrian Lewis says:

Hi Jimi – glad you like it! I’m pleased with it, I must say! On this laptop I’m using at present I can’t see all of the image – there should be more of the bird on the far right in view – it may be best to click onto the image to view it in its entirety. Adrian

When I first saw this I thought it was a drawing, just stunning.

    A wonderful shot! Fantastic!

  7. bananabatman says:

That’s a cracking shot Adrian. Dave.

    • Adrian Lewis says:

Thanks, Dave – I’m very pleased with it, I must admit. And it came to light only through a trawle through old files, looking for ones to delete – in prepartion for getting a memory-hungry Nikon D800! Thank you again. Adrian

  8. Sonali Dalal says:

Absolutely mind blowing Adrian!! Tones are great too! Composition is good and I like the textures on birds.

  9. athyfoto says:

Great capture, the PP is really nice too.

  10. krikitarts says:

What beauty in motion! Seabirds are among my favorites to photograph, and the gannets probably soar at the top of that list. Again you inspire me–must post a couple soon, too.

    • Adrian Lewis says:

Thank you, Gary – you’ve mentioned inspiration before, and if that’s so I’m pleased! Gannets, certainly.

This image was found by chance in a trawle through old images – I’m feverishly deleting unwanted shots, as a prelude to getting a Nikon D800 soon – with this megapixel monster I’ll need the disk space! I intend continuing with the D700 too. But, with larger image files, the D800 will allow greater enlargements from small areas of pictures.

Thanks for your kind words, man! Adrian

  11. Helen Cherry says:

Beuatiful.. they remind me of Victorian drawings :)

    • Adrian Lewis says:

Absolutely – Victorian, yes – thanks for your thoughts, Helen! And if I can make photos look unlike photos, I’m happy!

My retirement >>>appears to be on track – 31 March – I have a spreadsheet counting off the working days! Adrian

      • Helen Cherry says:

Excellent news… and I will be starting permanent 32 hr week ( 4 x 8 hr days) with every Thursday off.. Yippee !

        • Adrian Lewis says:

That’s good – I used to work 9-day fortnights, with every other Monday off, and that was a decided improvement on the normal grind.

So I guess you’re back at work and ok – well its good you’re ok – but not so sure about the work thing!!! Said seriously – take good care of yourself, Helen, Adrian
