PEOPLE 43 – FIGURE STUDY 2, MOVING TOWARDS ABSTRACTION – MONOCHROME

Nude ; 21 Aug 07.

This figure study is well on the way towards abstraction.  The intense light spills over from the left, burning out the subject’s left flank and most of her lower torso.  Her body is left as an almost disjointed series of mid and darker tones, sharply demarcated against the black background.

Nikon F6 with 24mm-85mm Nikkor; Ilford Delta 3200 Professional black and white film rated at 3200 ISO;  light from a single window; manipulated with Silver Efex Pro.

  1. This is building into a very impressive series Adrian, and this one is definitely my favourite so far. The contrast between the almost washed out white and that deep, dark black is simply astonishing, it works wonderfully. And those hints of shadows on her body makes a good figure study, a remarkable one. Well done!

Wow! thanks, JP, thanks. The black background was a black sheet set up some way back so as not to catch much light, but I’ve also intensified the black digitally, because I was really looking for the model being caught right at the meeting point of the white and the black, right at the contrast boundary.

Not sure about a series, but you can find earlier figure studies by using the “Complete Lists of Posts” link, which is in my header, and near the bottom of my sidebar. The pictures are all in the PEOPLE series, numbers 1, 2, 3a, 7, 11 and14 (which I know you’ve seen). Adrian

I like the abstract quality of this image.

Thanks for your comment. I might try making it even more abstract, by further increasing the light shining from the left, but I’m unsure if this would improve the image. I’m glad you like the shot. Adrian

      • Is it only natural light that you used? You did mention that a window was used as a light source. In my opinion I don’t think you should increase the light from the left, it’s perfect as is.

        • Adrian Lewis says:

Yes, I’ve done little work with models, but have always stuck with very simple lighting set ups. I read somewhere the window light is the best light and of course its free, and that’s completely true. Here there was just light from a single window. Thanks for your kind comments. Adrian
